Direct Access Barrister

Artis Obonyo Kakonge

I have been a qualified barrister in England and Wales since 2006, bringing nearly two decades of high-level expertise to complex legal disputes. I have built a diverse and dynamic practice, offering expert advice and representation across family law, Court of Protection matters, and professional discipline/regulatory proceedings.

I provide advice and representation to individuals coping with relationship breakdown and parents, step-parents, grandparents, and other concerned relatives seeking to make arrangements in the best interests of a child. I help individuals and couples looking to start or grow their family through adoption and surrogacy. My practice extends to the Court of Protection, where I act for individuals, family members, local authorities, health bodies, and the Official Solicitor in both health and welfare and property and financial affairs applications. I have particular experience representing family members navigating the formal legal arrangements needed to manage the affairs of a loved one affected by dementia, acquired brain injury, or other conditions causing loss of capacity.
Where family law and Court of Protection issues intersect — for example, where a party to financial remedy or children proceedings lacks capacity, or where a family dispute arises in the context of managing a relative's affairs — I am well placed to advise across both areas. Finally, I act for registered professionals facing fitness to practise proceedings before the NMC and Social Work England at every stage, from interim hearings through to substantive and review hearings.

Area of Law

Family

Family Finance & Financial Remedies on Divorce
I have a well-established financial remedies practice, advising and representing clients at all stages of relationship breakdown. I handle cases from modest to medium net worth, including those involving business interests, company structures, and pension assets, and regularly undertake Schedule 1 applications for financial provision for children.

I can assist with:

Financial remedy proceedings on divorce and separation
Schedule 1 applications for financial provision for children
Cases involving companies, business assets, and complex pension arrangements
Cases with a Court of Protection dimension, including where a party lacks capacity

Child Arrangements, Adoption, Special guardianship, Surrogacy
I have extensive experience in private law children proceedings, shaped by several years as a senior childcare advocate representing children's services at all levels of the family courts in complex public law cases. That background gives me a sharper eye for safeguarding concerns and serious allegations when they arise in private law disputes.
I am an experienced in international relocation applications, advising and representing parents both seeking and opposing leave to remove. My broader international practice — spanning child abduction, wardship, intercountry adoption, and kafala arrangements means I am well placed to advise where relocation disputes.

Mental Health and Court of Protection

I am a highly experienced Court of Protection advocate, regularly instructed by individuals, local authorities, health bodies, and the Official Solicitor. I act in both health and welfare and property and financial affairs applications. I am sensitive to the impact of dementia and other conditions causing cognitive impairment on families and those who care for them.
I previously worked in local government, representing adult social care teams before the Court of Protection and advising on young people leaving care who lacked capacity. I am particularly attuned to the practical and emotional challenges faced by family members seeking to formalise arrangements to manage the affairs of a loved one, and take care to guide clients through what can be a daunting and unfamiliar process.
My established family law practice means that I am especially well placed to handle cases where Court of Protection issues intersect with family proceedings — for example, where a party to financial remedy or children proceedings lacks capacity, or where family disputes arise in the context of a property and financial affairs application.
Notable case: MOD & Ors (Deprivation of Liberty) [2015] EWCOP 47

I bring the same commitment and attention to detail to regulatory work as I do across my wider practice, ensuring that those I represent have a clear and compelling voice at every stage of the process.
