Direct Access Barrister

Ka Li Cheung

I am a practising barrister in England and Wales with experience in civil and commercial disputes. I regularly assist clients from the Chinese-speaking community in the United Kingdom. Many of the matters I deal with involve cross-border elements between the UK, Hong Kong, and mainland China.

Under the Public Access scheme, I can assist with legal advice and case assessment, drafting legal documents, representation in court hearings, advice on litigation strategy and settlement.

Where a matter requires the involvement of a solicitor, I can assist clients in identifying appropriate solicitors to work alongside counsel.

Area of Law

Business and Corporate

I frequently assist:
Chinese entrepreneurs and business owners in the UK;
overseas investors with disputes in England and Wales;
members of the Chinese community involved in civil disputes; and
clients requiring advice on cross-border legal issues.

Private International Law

My practice regularly involves matters with an international or cross-border dimension. I frequently assist clients in disputes and advisory work where parties, assets, or transactions span multiple jurisdictions.

In particular, I have experience dealing with legal issues arising between England and Wales, Hong Kong, and mainland China, including disputes involving international business transactions, contractual relationships, and allegations of fraud or misrepresentation with cross-border elements.

My work includes advising on matters such as jurisdiction, applicable law, and the recognition or enforcement of foreign judgments. I also assist clients in understanding the strategic implications of pursuing litigation in different jurisdictions and in managing disputes where legal proceedings or enforcement may involve more than one legal system.

Through my familiarity with common law and civil law systems, and cross-border commercial practice, I am able to assist clients in navigating complex disputes involving international parties. Where necessary, I work alongside instructing solicitors and foreign lawyers to ensure that matters involving multiple jurisdictions are handled effectively and in accordance with the relevant procedural requirements.

What sort of work do I do?

I advise and represent clients in a wide range of disputes, including contractual disputes, business and shareholder disputes, debt recovery and unpaid invoices, fraud, misrepresentation, and deception claims, property and commercial disagreements.

Most disputes involving overseas parties require careful consideration of jurisdiction and enforcement issues. I assist client with disputes involving parties located in different countries, enforcement of foreign judgments in England and Wales, UK litigation involving businesses or individuals based in Hong Kong and mainland China.

I also provide advice on legal rights, dispute strategy, and potential litigation before proceedings are commenced.

Who do I work for?

I regularly assist clients from the Chinese-speaking community in the United Kingdom, including entrepreneurs, professionals, investors, and families. Being able to communicate in English, Cantonese, Teochew, and Mandarin, I am able to explain complex legal issues clearly and help client navigate the legal system in England and Wales with confidence.
