Direct Access Barrister

Rachel Anna Jane Bennett

*Experienced family law Barrister (Call 2002; Pupillage 2018: former Solicitor (2008))
*Neurodiversity specialist
*Disability and vulnerability expert
*Private Children Law (parents can’t agree the arrangements for their children)
*Public Children Law (local authority is concerned about children in their parents’ care)
*Parental alienation, child abuse, adult domestic abuse issues

I am an adept family law Barrister, specialising in all cases involving children, but with a particular expertise in cases where neurodiversity and other differences and challenges exist within families. My niche practice stems from extensive work supporting neurodiverse individuals and those facing learning, mental and physical health, and communication, difficulties. I have deep insight into the complexities such issues introduce into relationships and family dynamics.

I have a calming and reassuring manner with clients, whilst maintaining a robust approach to advocating for them. I adapt my approach to suit individual client profiles and family dynamics. My practice is largely in private children law matters (where parents can’t agree on the arrangements for their children when their relationship breaks down) and I am in demand for my expertise in cases involving neurodiversity, disability, vulnerability, parental alienation, and allegations of abuse.

In public family law matters (“care proceedings” - where a local authority is concerned about the care children are receiving from the adults looking after them), I represent parents, children (through their guardian), other family members such as grandparents, potential special guardians, through all stages.

What sort of work do I do?

I practice exclusively in family law and in cases involving children. I have a particular interest and expertise in cases where neurodiversity and other differences and challenges exist within families, such as physical or mental health, learning or communication issues. I also have experience in cases involving domestic abuse and applications under the Family Law Act 1996 (non-molestation order and occupation order applications, which protect victims of abuse and also protect both people where there are allegations on both sides).

Prior to specialising as a family law Barrister, I worked for many years as a solicitor, paralegal, legal researcher, and university lecturer. I was also a Special Police Constable, (latterly Inspector) for over 10 years, receiving multiple awards for exceptional service. My very broad work and life experience mean that I am seasoned at dealing with complex matters and traumatic experiences and am skilled at finding child and client-focussed solutions to family law problems.

I offer remote and in-person services, so I am accessible regardless of a client's location. In terms of court hearings, courts will often agree to applications for remote representation, so, if my expertise and specialisms match your requirements, do not hesitate to be in touch.

Who do I work for?

I help people who are struggling resolving a dispute or problem within their family, usually where children are involved. I help parents who are struggling to agree on the arrangements for their children when their relationship has ended. I help other family members eg grandparents and step-parents, including when they are putting themselves forward to care for a child who cannot be cared for by their parents. I am a specialist in assisting families where neurodiversity is an issue: eg one or both parents are neurodiverse and/or one or more of the children are neurodiverse (with or without formal diagnosis).
