Direct Access Barrister
Sharmeen Quadri
I am a self-employed barrister accepting instructions directly from members of the public and businesses under the Direct Access scheme. I work with clients where the legal, financial or personal consequences of a matter are significant and where early, strategic advice can materially affect the outcome.
My practice focuses primarily on employment and immigration law. In employment matters, I advise employers on workplace disputes, disciplinary processes and employment tribunal claims, with an emphasis on early risk assessment, strategy and efficient resolution. In immigration matters, I assist individuals and businesses with complex applications, appeals and compliance issues, particularly where refusal or enforcement action would have serious consequences.
Clients instruct me for clear, practical advice delivered in plain English, together with a realistic assessment of risk and options at an early stage. My approach is strategic rather than reactive, and I focus on helping clients make informed decisions that reduce exposure and avoid unnecessary escalation.
I also have experience across family and criminal law, which informs my ability to manage sensitive, high-pressure matters with discretion, focus and clarity.
I accept Direct Access instructions where appropriate and will advise promptly if a matter would benefit from the involvement of a solicitor.
Area of Law
Crime
I have experience in private criminal defence work, including advising individuals facing criminal allegations and representing clients in the Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court. I am often instructed for early strategic advice, bail and charging issues, and advocacy in contested hearings. My work focuses on careful preparation, clear analysis of evidence and effective representation in matters carrying serious personal or reputation consequences.
Employment and Pensions
I have experience advising employers on a wide range of employment law issues, including workplace disputes, disciplinary and grievance processes, and employment tribunal claims. I am regularly instructed to provide early case assessment, advise on litigation risk and strategy, and draft pleadings. My work often involves helping employers make informed decisions at an early stage to reduce exposure, manage risk and resolve disputes efficiently, including representation at hearings where appropriate.
Family
I have experience in private family law matters involving children and financial disputes. I am typically instructed to provide focused advice, draft documents and represent clients in discrete hearings. My approach is pragmatic and proportionate, with an emphasis on helping clients understand risk, options and likely outcomes, and supporting effective decision-making in matters with long-term personal consequences.
Immigration, Asylum and Nationality
I have experience advising individuals and businesses on complex immigration matters, including applications, appeals and compliance issues. I am often instructed where the consequences of refusal or enforcement action are significant, and where careful preparation and strategic advice are required. My work includes advising on immigration strategy, identifying risks at an early stage, and representing clients in appeals, with a focus on clarity, accuracy and effective presentation of cases.
What sort of work do I do?
I am instructed in matters where the legal and practical consequences are significant and where early, strategic advice can make a material difference.
My work includes:
• Advising employers on employment disputes, disciplinary processes and employment tribunal claims, including early case assessment, strategy and advocacy
• Providing strategic advice to employers on employment risk, compliance issues and dispute prevention
• Assisting individuals and businesses with complex immigration matters, including applications, appeals and compliance concerns where refusal or enforcement action would have serious consequences
• Advising professionals and individuals who require clear, focused advice on their position and options at an early stage
• Representing clients in hearings and appeals where specialist barrister input is required
I am typically instructed where matters are time-sensitive, high-risk or complex, and where clients require clear, practical advice rather than generic guidance.
I also accept selective instructions in private criminal defence and family law matters where allegations or disputes carry serious personal consequences. I am typically instructed for early strategic advice and discrete advocacy in hearings involving children, financial issues or criminal allegations, providing clear, focused guidance in high-pressure situations.
Who do I work for?
My clients include employers, business owners, professionals and private individuals who are dealing with legal issues carrying serious financial, professional or personal consequences. I am typically instructed by employers facing employment tribunal claims or workplace disputes, and by individuals and businesses requiring strategic advice on complex immigration matters. I also act for private clients in criminal and family law matters where allegations or disputes have significant reputation or long-term impact. Clients who instruct me value clear, practical advice, early assessment of risk, and a focused, strategic approach rather than ongoing, open-ended litigation.
